Clara Pearl Dyer papers [microform], 1935-1941.

Collection comprises personal letters and reports that reflect the missionary work of Methodist missionary and teacher Clara Pearl Dyer between 1935 and 1941. Her letters include insights into evangelical work among the Chinese students and their proselytizing in local Ch'angli communities. She describes the increase in banditry in her area after 1931and discusses effect of the war between China and Japan on the missionaries and their activities, friends, and converts. Dyer sent letters to her friends and family approximately every six months, but the collection does not not contain information on her life or work prior to 1935 or after 1941.

Clara Dyer (1875-1966) served as a Methodist missionary in Ch'angli, Hopei (Hopeh) Province, in northern China, during much of the first half of the twentieth century. Dyer appears to have begun missionary work in China in 1908; by 1931 she taught girls at the Alderman School in Ch'angli. As an experienced missionary, Dyer sent letters updating her friends and family approximately every six months.
